Artistic Literacy

Carl Sandburg Middle School eighth graders were in high concentration mode recently in Lilly Fischer’s art class. Some students were tracing images on windows while others were working on pottery wheels. Some were studying the works of artist Andy Warhol by tracing images, others were emulating contemporary sculptor Richard Erdman.

The great works of art provide guideposts to cultural literacy, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. That same publication states that arts education fosters creativity and teaches effective communication. In addition, the NCES states that the arts can often reach students who traditionally have had difficulty in standard academic environments and can improve the general learning environment for all students.
