Fire Safety

The young minds at Washington Early Learning Center were in awe of the giant fire truck that ate up much of the school’s outdoor play area.

The Mundelein Fire Department spent the morning with the students in grades kindergarten through two providing them with fire safety education.

Students also took a tour of Mundelein Tower 431, a custom built truck that can carry up to four firefighters. The truck has a large ladder that extends to 100 feet.

Part of the school’s goal is to study the community and introduce students to officials in their community who will help protect them and keep them safe from harm.

“We stress with students safety, respectfulness, and to be responsible,” said Principal Jim Kallieris.

Added Officer Steve Dincognito, "My job is very simple. I want to prepare children for a fire in the home when they are least expecting it. I want them to have a mental picture of the process necessary to safely identify hazards and evacuate their bedroom if the smoke detector goes off while they are asleep and when to shelter in place and go by a window."
