Messner has published over twenty-something books of multiple genres - picture books, mysteries, historical adventure, thrillers, and more. Several of her novels have themes that address real-world issues facing young people today. Titles popular with elementary school children are the Ranger in Time historical adventure chapter book series about a time-traveling search and rescue dog, and the Marty McGuire books with an “impressionable third grader” as the main character. In preparation for the visit, each and every student at Mechanics Grove Elementary school has been read The Brilliant Deep: Rebuilding the World’s Coral Reefs, a tribute to Ken Nedimyer the coral restoration pioneer.
Professional development opportunities for district teachers were provided by Ms. Messner during special sessions after school on November 27th and 28th. This author’s highly anticipated visit is in keeping with the district-wide objective to promote literacy and enhance daily student reading, writing, listening and speaking experiences. The district invites authors annually to model writing processes, challenges, failures and successes. As Instructional Coach Mrs. Jen Vincent comments, the visits by Kate Messner will be another celebration of literacy for Mundelein District #75 as the schools continue to “foster a passion for literacy as a lifelong endeavor.”
