Clubs at Mechanics Grove

Close to three hundred students are participating in the many clubs being offered at Mechanics Grove School. MG clubs continue to be popular after school as they provide a diverse variety of activities for students. Club organizer Sandy Schrank comments that, “this year we have a wide range of clubs - from sports to Spanish and anything in between!” Through club experiences students are offered opportunities that they may not receive during the regular school day and meet several intended goals. Clubs create a positive environment where relationships can be built, provide an additional sense of belonging, offer meaningful learning experiences while exploring interests and talents, help one to find their own unique voice, and simply, are F U N!

District 75 Receives School Safety Grant Funds

Mundelein School District 75 is receiving $130,000 of a $262,699 grant awarded to the Mundelein Police Department to improve school safety measures. The funds, part of the STOP School Violence Act, will be used to secure entries, add panic buttons, and add strobe lights for lock-downs in areas where the intercom cannot be heard, for example, gyms, cafeterias, and band rooms.

“School safety is a top priority for everyone, this grant gives Mundelein a unique opportunity to make some significant safety enhancements and provide a more secure environment to our children,” commented Mundelein Police Chief Eric Guenther.

“We appreciate Police Chief Guenther for alerting us about the grants and for sponsoring a grant writer to coordinate the application process,” said Andy Henrikson, Mundelein School District 75 Superintendent.

Mundelein School District 75 Hosts Author

Mundelein School District 75 schools hosted visits by Kate Messner, the award-winning author of books for young readers. The former tv news reporter and English teacher spoke with 6th - 8th grade students at Carl Sandburg Middle School on November 28th, primary students at Washington Early Learning Center on November 27th, and elementary school children at Mechanics Grove Elementary School on November 29th. As mentioned on her website, Ms. Messner loves to write books for children because “the books we read as kids are books that help shape us.”

Every teacher in District 75 is committed to helping students grow. Each educator works endlessly so that students can truly glow. But how many teachers do you know who take “glowing” literally? With a few sheets of black paper, a blacklight, and 47 sets of glow stick glasses, second grade teacher Diane Bischoff successfully hosted Glow Day, having transformed her room into a neon wonderland all for the purpose of increasing student engagement in learning.

In-School Flu Vaccination

The cold and flu season is approaching us. To prevent widespread flu in our schools, we have collaborated with Advocate Children’s Hospital to offer free influenza or “flu” vaccinations during the school day to students who qualify for medicaid or who are uninsured.

The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile clinic will be at the following schools and times:
Carl Sandburg Middle School- Tuesday, November 6 at 9:30AM
Washington Early Learning Center- Wednesday, November 7 at 9:30AM
Mechanic’s Grove Elementary School- Thursday November 8 at 9:30AM

Merrily We Roll Along – to Camp Duncan!

Early morning, on Thursday, September 27th busses were loaded with almost the entire one hundred and eighty-two fifth grade students of Mechanics Grove School. Traveling about eleven miles northwest to YMCA Camp Duncan in Ingelside, Illinois, the seats were filled with sleeping bags, bug spray, marshmallows, teachers, parent chaperones, and the extremely fired-up students!
