Emergency School Closing & 2-Hour Late Start

Emergency Events
We will post emergency notices on front page of our website under News and Announcements. Parents and staff members are encouraged to sign up under Notify Me for District News and Announcements and the District Calendar. This will ensure that parents receive an immediate text or email message to go to the District website for important information and direction on how to respond to the emergency.

School Closings for Inclement Weather
School closings for weather will be posted on the front page of our website under News and Announcements, a message will be sent through our Alert Solutions automated system and local news channels will be notified.
2-Hour Late Start

The superintendent may call for a 2-hour late start if, for example, after a heavy overnight snowfall the Village snowplows can clear the roads by 8:00 AM. During a 2-Hour Late Start everything that happens before school will occur two hours later. At the end of the school day however, everything will remain unchanged, including, school dismissal times, bus drop off times, and after school activities. Below are some questions and answers to help you better understand the 2-Hour Late Start.

When will the bus pick up my child in the morning?

Add exactly two hours to your child’s regular bus stop time. For example, if your child’s regular pick up time is 7:42 AM, then the bus should arrive at 9:42 AM. We hope that since there will be little commuter traffic mid-morning that the busses will be on time, however their timeliness also depends on how much the roads have been cleared of snow.

What about preschool children at Lincoln and Carl Sandburg?

Morning preschool classes will be cancelled during a two-hour late start.

Afternoon preschool classes will follow their regular routines with no changes to bussing, school start and end times. After school activities may or may not be cancelled.

How will I be notified about either school closing or a two-hour late start?

As soon as practical, but no later than 5:00 AM, the superintendent will make a determination about closing or delaying school by two hours. Parents will be alerted via text, voice, or email through the District 75 Alert system. If you have not been receiving alerts this year, please call or email Patty DeLozier to share your contact information ( or 847 949-2700). News about a two-hour late start or school closing will also be posted on the front page of our website: Finally, District 75 will also inform the Emergency School Closing Center which broadcasts the information on various local television and radio stations.

What if my child or I miss the message?

To keep our children safe, the front doors of each school will be unlocked as if it is a normal day.  In case a child does not get the message and accidentally comes to school an administrator will help the child arrange transportation home.

Parent Choice and Responsibility

Especially on bitterly cold days, if a parent does not feel that it is safe for his/her child to walk to school or wait at the bus stop, the parent may choose to keep the child home. Parents that so choose must alert the school office before school begins.
